An American contemporary artist, Genevieve Gaignard is best known for her photographic self-portraiture, collage, and sculpture that explore race, femininity, class, and their various intersections. Born in Orange, Massachusetts, in 1981, she is best known as a self-identified mixed-race woman, utilizing photography and the found image to explore and celebrate the beauty of blackness and black culture. Investigating the aesthetic and cultural divide between black and white, a chasm as palpable as it is “invisible,” Gaignard challenges viewers to navigate the powers and anxieties of intersectional identity.

“So often, these topics are avoided because we don’t know where to start,” said Gaignard. “I use myself as the subject of my work to address my own experiences and curiosities as a biracial woman. There are no rules as to what you are supposed to walk away with, but my hope is that it challenges and shifts people’s perspectives in a positive way.
